As a follow-up to Legend of the Red Dragon, a game that burst at its seams with derivative borrowing, no one was expecting such a radical departure in approach and style as they got in New World -- something akin to an unwholesome marriage of Ultima, ZZT and Habitat, a realtime multiplayer BBS door effectively amounting to a roguelike MUD with a huge sandbox for free play alone (even locally) or with all your friends.
A massive world map permits movement between numerous cities and regions and involvement in their respective political intrigues (and outright military campaigns!) against each other; alternately, a player wishing to fish on the end of the dock or collect berries for Mom to bake into pie can happily play on that scale as long as they like. There's no shortage of quests (especially with the option to include user-contributed in-game modules) and no lack of opportunities to increase experience through the slaying of random encounters. On the other hand if you prefer you can just sit around the tavern or picnic blanket and chew the fat with your buddies, exchanging comments and trading curious items acquired in your journeys.

This game was great for meeting new ladies and meeting them in person off of the BBS.The add on's to this game make LORD a lot tougher to play, like Winter Lord.
This game could play well as high as 56K modems, before internet got popular.
I even got to meet a lady who was named Violet :D.I hope that Seth Able Robinson found his Violet or equivalent babe.
Lord_net was a challenge and just to make it to Level 12 and survive being killed was a challenge for that time period.
Creating teams with other players made it easier to march through the game.
Most of the BBS's in the province of Ontario Canada was running this game.

This is a BBS 'door' game, and is intended to be hosted by an online bulletin board system (or BBS) which are largely non-existent today. You can find some to telenet to on the internet, and they will likely still be hosting this popular game. The game gives you a set number of turns each day, and through choices and random encounters, allows you to build score, and reputation against other human players who would also log in to play their turns, typically not at the same time you did. This game allowed the users to leave messages with one another, add to an ongoing chat board, and even marry other players.
L.O.R.D. is unlikely to be enjoyable in single player format, and may even be difficult to configure outside of it's expected BBS environment. Because it was played over dial up modems, the graphics are ascii or ANSI, and played well even at 14.4k baud. It is expected to be a multiplayer, turn based game, with most of the meaningful interactions taking place with other actual players.
